Volunteer

We provide free, confidential, and individualized tutoring services to adults in basic literacy (BL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Tutoring is provided by professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. Adult learners and tutors work one-on-one at a time and at a public place that is mutually convenient. Pairs may also meet remotely.

Picking an Orange Book

Program staff carefully match tutor-student pairs and provide support and guidance throughout the tutoring process. Our flexible scheduling and individualized approach help mitigate the logistical barriers to tutoring that many students face, including lack of childcare or transportation, or in fear of failure or embarrassment in a classroom setting.

There are many ways to get involved with Literacy Volunteers of South Central Massachusetts! You can become a tutor, administrative volunteer, help in a citizenship or conversation class, serve on a committee, or become a member of the Board of Directors.

Attend a Volunteer Information Session

Attend a volunteer information session to find out if becoming a Literacy Volunteer is the right fit for you!

Volunteer Information Sessions are offered each month and alternate between virtual and in person sessions at a variety of locations. Upcoming dates, times and locations of information sessions are included in our monthly newsletter and are posted to our Facebook page.

Sessions include detailed information about the program and what we offer, time commitments, and training provided to volunteers. Attendance at an information session is required prior to enrolling in a Tutor Training, so if you (or anyone you know!) are interested in becoming a professionally trained Literacy Volunteer with LVSCM, sign up for an information session today!

Fast Facts:

  • No teaching experience is required! Professional tutor training is provided.

  • No need to speak another language to be an ESOL tutor. Our approach to beginner ESOL tutoring utilizes everyday, survival English that our tutors are trained to teach.

  • LVSCM asks for a commitment of two hours per week of tutoring for nine to twelve months.
